iSCSI is Internet SCSI (Small Computer System Interface), an Internet Protocol (IP)-based storage networking standard for linking data storage facilities and devices.
What would I use iSCSI for?
iSCSI provides an alternative connectivity means to Fibre Channel technology. Many SAN vendors now offer iSCSI as a standard or optional interface on their storage arrays. Although currently not as fast as Fibre Channel, iSCSI can provide a lower cost connection option to servers and other devices by utilising existing ethernet switching infrastructure. iSCSI particularly fits well into long distance data replication solutions where direct fibre channel links are not available but IP is.
